The senator’s voice came through the intercom. “Put him on the camera.”

The commander pushed himself upright, looked at the frozen replay on the bulkhead display, and stopped denying the charge.

Instead, he pointed at the maintenance archive screen only I knew how to open.

The question landed harder than the blast because it sounded reasonable.

Twelve people were still trapped inside the crawler. The aircraft was balanced on failing ice. A commander had just been dragged aboard with a detonator in his glove, and now he was accusing the mechanic who saved the plane of having secret access to its controls.

I could feel everyone waiting for me to defend myself.

I did not give them a speech.

The copilot reached for the menu, then paused.

The commander stepped between him and the display.

His voice had changed. The calm contempt was gone, but the habit of command remained. He was no longer trying to prove the charge had been harmless. He was trying to make my knowledge look more dangerous than his decision.

The pilot called from the cockpit. “Get clear of the controls.”

The commander ignored him.

For three seasons, I had watched him use urgency as a weapon. Every question became delay. Every safety concern became weakness. Every mechanic who asked for another inspection was accused of protecting equipment instead of the mission.

That was how he had built the moment on the ice.

The fracture beneath the runway had been reported during the morning survey. He had cut the inspection short because the twelve visitors were already waiting, the weather window was closing, and he wanted the evacuation demonstration completed on his schedule.

I had found fresh scoring around the left ski mount while checking the cargo bay. When I asked for ten more minutes, he told me to stay with the aircraft and keep quiet.

Then the ice moved.

The crawler rolled toward the marked safe zone. The commander stayed outside, supposedly to direct us. Instead, he fixed the shaped charge against the ski, sealed the visitors away from the view, and planned to let the aircraft disappear with the mechanic who had seen too much.

The copilot moved around him and opened the page.

The commander looked at me.

The commander laughed once, without humor.

I pointed to the event strip.

The system showed every command I had entered after the blast. It also showed the maintenance bypass entered before it. My commands came from the cargo console. The bypass came from the external service channel paired to his trigger.

One sequence saved the aircraft.

The senator who had spoken earlier asked the pilot a single question.

The commander turned toward the cockpit.

It was not a dramatic declaration. He said it while watching the instruments, one hand on the throttles and the other holding the wheel against the wind.

That made it feel final.

The commander looked toward the rear ramp.

The crevasse had widened behind us. The crawler sat thirty yards away on a patch of ice that was still intact, but a dark line now ran between the vehicle and the aircraft.

The twelve people inside could not remain there.

I checked the rail display.

The commander looked up at that answer.

Only then did the ramp begin to close.

Because everyone finally understood what the rails had been built to prove.

Weight could be moved.
